With its boldest Project, Dacar Motorsport’s Team is developing Otto-cycle engines for small aircraft. It’s a true change of focus for the company. We accepted the challenge to test the expression “the sky is the limit” and to develop and innovate the engineering of a business that is unchanged for decades.
Airplane engines have old designs, tested through decades, they are a reliable and traditional recipe of worldwide aviation. These engines are built with attention to detail, their reliability and functionality have people’s lives at hand. In case these engines are properly used, with attention to their maintenance and proper operation, we are sure it will never fail during operation.
All this aircraft philosophy has its flaws. The engine efficiency is low because of all mechanical controls. Aircraft engines could deliver much more torque and power with less fuel. Looking at this matters, Dacar Motorsport has decided to combine the qualities of two distinct worlds, aviation with its reliability and building standards, and from the motorsport world, with performance, efficiency and innovation.
Raising the reliability of the whole engine system, through the use of an advanced electronic system, we pursue to have as many redundancies as possible in the whole operation of the aircraft engines. Optimizing the engine operation with all conditions of throttle position and engine speed is also a priority in Dacar Motorsport’s project. There are two control units, each with its own electrical system. Each electronic system is capable of managing the engine operation on its own, coexisting just for safety purposes.
Not only electronically, but also mechanically, Dacar Motorsport has made improvements to the Otto-Cycle aircraft engines. A doubled fuel system distribution, reinforcements made with aluminum alloy to gears that now have rpm sensors and other multiple structural improvements.
With all this enhancements, not even the sky is the limit for Dacar Motorsport. The first units of this project are being tested at Dacar Motorsport’s dynamometers. Soon the market will have a technology revolution of efficiency in a world where energy becomes more expansive on a daily basis.
